Member of the Indo-Iranian branch of the
Indo-European language family, closely
related to Hindi and Urdu and originating in
the bazaars of Delhi. It is a lingua franca
in many parts of the Republic of India. It
was the contact language during the British
Raj between many of the British in India and
the native Indians. It is sometimes known as
Bazaar Hindi.
